Seemed like (and did become) a good way to extend my professional network.

2. Years ago I did the personal/professional two-account thing but for years it's only been my work account which is probably 95% professional tweets.

3. and 4. @OncologyNursing is the organization account (with thousands more followers) and is more often announcements of ONS courses, publications, involvements, etc. @ONSmark is a mix of tweets related to oncology nursing, cancer, and (usually medical) library type things, plus I'm able to "converse" from it by participating in chats, tweeting with people one-one-one, etc.

5. It's been so long I forget but I think #medlibs seemed like a useful companion to MEDLIB-L

6. I have asked lit search and other questions using #medlibs and rarely get a reply; however, I often reply to others who do the same.

7. Twitter is useful for collaboration in general, but sometimes #medlibs specifically seems a bit "insular" for lack of a better term (the same group of people only tweeting to others in the group and not really replying to others). I haven't found the nursing or cancer care communities as "insular" in this respect.

8. The Twitter bingo at #mlanet14 was further evidence. Not many people asked me to sign their card, but I did a lot of seeking and asking others to sign mine.
Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02133019267914467473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1843139445577627891.post-56729074405075517682014-08-25T13:04:14.072-07:002014-08-25T13:04:14.072-07:00Patient education is something that definitely nee...Patient education is something that definitely needs to be worked on. Since thesauri are constant works in progress, it may be something to consider down the road.

I like the suggestion component idea. As you may know, Twitter has a tagdef# website (http://tagdef.com/) that converts Twitter hashtags into definitions. It's a fairly loose controlled vocabulary. Including some of the e-science thesaurus terminology into this database may be another project to consider as the e-science field evolves.

Best,
Jenn Moyer BSN, RNAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1843139445577627891.post-25786670584665368442013-09-09T19:22:04.022-07:002013-09-09T19:22:04.022-07:00Jennifer,
Thank you for your insightful comments ...Jennifer,

Thank you for your insightful comments and questions. I will try to answer them briefly here:

I do believe that health informatics could fit into the realm of e-Science, but I think it would be more useful to have a focus or specific section on health informatics-related terminology in addition to the existing e-Science terms.

I think your suggestion of taking Dr. Bakken's measures is a good one. I have since searched for Dr. Bakken's article and have found it useful. I think it will be beneficial as we move towards a second iteration or the resource.

In terms of information sources, I used NISO's thesaurus schema as a starting point (http://www.niso.org/schemas/iso25964/) and then read through several articles in the journal of documentation, as well as Broughton's Essential Thesaurus Construction. That being said we decided on a simple format to start with because we wanted to get information to librarians quickly, and use this first iteration as a form of pilot.

I'm unclear about what you mean by partnering with a data specialist or information science specialist - we had multiple librarians working on this project and the entire resource was reviewed by many experts who work in some form of data-focused capacity. If you mean a data scientist, we did not have people with these skills at our disposal.

Since the #medlibs chat we believe it is important to implement a "Suggestion" component to the thesaurus where librarians can share terminology, resources, or literature that they believe should be added. I'm sure if other librarians were interested in enhancing the thesaurus I think that approach could be considered as well.

I hope this answers some of your questions; please feel free to ask more as they arise.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1843139445577627891.post-77759318089974822572013-09-09T06:46:45.620-07:002013-09-09T06:46:45.620-07:00From Jennifer Moyer, RN (@RNLibrarian)
Sorry to m...From Jennifer Moyer, RN (@RNLibrarian)

Sorry to miss this week's conversation about how the development of an e-science thesaurus will help create a foundation for establishing e-science as a discipline. @KevRev and @ElaineMartin2 presented a variety of useful resources, including an interview with Jason Priem, the Science Boot camp in June 2014, and the upcoming JESLIB article about the thesaurus. @pfAnderson raised the great idea of creating ontologies to accompany the thesaurus.

While a thesaurus is a constant, evolving work in progress, I have questions for @KevRev about its development. As mentioned by another #medlibs, I am wondering if health informatics fits into the e-science discipline. If so, I suggest that he contact Dr. Suzanne Bakken at Columbia University's School of Nursing. She spent a decade developing a thesaurus that appears to address many of the issues discussed and she is considered "the" thought leader in nurse informatics. (I forwarded the article about Dr. Bakken to Elaine Martin, if he is interested.) To this end, I do wonder what existing information science resources have been used to develop the thesaurus. I'm also wondering if @KevRev has considered partnering with an information science or data specialist to help develop the thesaurus. Lastly, is there a mechanism in place to support the work of developing the thesaurus and an ontology over time?

Thank you again Nikki and the UMass Medical School Lamar Soutter Library team for conducting a terrific chat. I’m still awed by just how many resources are shared in the hour long chats—I have two pages of notes on things to follow up on.

Research Data Management is a service that I’m interested in learning about, one I don’t have any experience with, so learning about the New England Collaborative Data Management Curriculum was a real perk. There was also a suggestion for an article in Library Trends that I found informative, Bibliometrics and Research Data Management Services: Emerging Trends in Library Support for Research.

I found the discussion surrounding federal open access policies and data management services to be enlightening—I’ll be looking for opportunities to learn more about that. Someone suggested a MOOC for Librarianship and Data Management Services, a brilliant idea. Coursera is currently offering a class called ‘Metadata: Organizing and Discovering Information’, and I think a course on data management would be a great follow-up.

Again, I’m left with enough resources to keep me reading for a month and lots of new ideas
Miss_bee.havedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15847521637130251926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1843139445577627891.post-53061946513202864332013-08-16T12:09:33.616-07:002013-08-16T12:09:33.616-07:00I think my head finally stopped spinning from last...I think my head finally stopped spinning from last night's Twitter chat! I'm not a huge tweeter, so the experience was unique for me. Overall, I really enjoyed it--the best thing was the resource sharing. One of my favorite things about librarianship is how effective the team teach & learn approach can be, it was so clearly exhibited here. I learned lots of new terms and heard old terms used in new ways.

The transcript was a lifesaver--things were so much clearer after I re-read through it. It's also really helpful because it includes live links to the resources people shared.

Research Data Management and Data Management Plans are themes that I'm looking forward to delving deeper into in upcoming chats. I'm also interested in learning more about bioinformatics, so I'll be investigating the resources surrounding that.

It was a tiny bit overwhelming, but interesting and helpful. Now that I have the hang of things, I hope to be more 'vocal' in future chats.Miss_bee.havedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15847521637130251926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1843139445577627891.post-66157755055961259622013-08-15T07:40:02.812-07:002013-08-15T07:40:02.812-07:00Hi Susan!
