Apps and Tablets Chat

Edit: Transcript available at http://bit.ly/15AWGNx

Tomorrow (Thursday 3/7/13) at 6pm Pacific/9:00pm Eastern, Michelle Kraft (@krafty) will be hosting the #medlibs chat on apps and tablets.  What are you doing with apps? Are you creating a library specific app, catalog app, etc? Or do you have a good app guide that you want to share with others?  Is there a push for tablets within your institution, if so which one?  Can tablets access the EMR so that your docs & nurses can treat patients and do research with one device?

What other trends do you see or want discussed about apps and tablets? For more details check out her blog post

Personally, I always like to settle in at Starbucks with my laptop and a congenial beverage and dive into this document. Sure, I get some odd looks for all of the cackling and yips of glee, but haters gon hate, right??

Open mic night: Opinion vs. libel?

Edit: Transcript available at http://bit.ly/12UsdeT

Join us on Thursday, February 21, 2013 for a #medlibs chat on Twitter at 6pm Pacific/9 Eastern where all topics are up for discussion but especially a focus on current events such as

  • The Medical Library Association (MLA) joint statement with AAHSL in support of Dale Askey and McMaster University, sued by a publisher for a critical blog post. Read details at The Chronicle of Higher Education.
  • Think this is isolated? Think again - Jeffrey Beall at University of Colorado has also been sued by a publisher about his blog  (thanks Eric Schnell) Back in 2007 the issue of bloggers having libel insurance was discussed here, and media liability insurance is an option for members of The Authors Guilde to purchase (thanks Michelle Kraft)
  • What are the repercussions of this for book reviewers, open peer review, and related scholarly discourse? Some perspectives have been shared at the Law Librarian Blog (thanks Alison Aldrich)

Librarians on Rounds

Edit: Transcript available at http://bit.ly/VKxIdJ

Edit: @pfanderson kindly posted on her blog about the apps mentioned in this week's chat. She includes links and screenshots.

Hello #medlibs,

Our chat topic for this Thursday will be Librarians on Rounds. Do you participate in rounds (post-call, walking, sitting, other) with a team of clinicians in a hospital? Would you like to know more about rounding and what it entails? Join us at 6pm Pacific/9 Eastern this Thursday, February 7. We will swap stories and hopefully arrive at some best practices for getting involved on rounds, following those fast-paced clinical conversations, and carving out roles for ourselves to facilitate the practice of evidence-based medicine in the real world.

I (@aldricham) will be your host, and my cross-town colleague @TonyNguyen411 will be chiming in, too. We hope you'll join us. All are welcome!

Never participated in a Twitter hashtag chat before? Not to worry. Check out this overview and give #medlibs a try. You'll be chatting it up in no time.
